Fayetteville, Ark. -- Rice junior track and field athlete Jason Colwick advanced to the pole vault final at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship at John McDonnell Field. Also, junior decathlete Philip Adam sits in 12th place after the first day of competition.
Colwick, from San Marcos, Texas, cleared his opening height of 5.25m/17-2.25 on his first attempt and then cleared 5.35m/17-6.5 on his second try to advance to Friday's final (3:45 p.m. CST).
He entered competition as holder of the world's No. 2 mark for 2009 at 5.72m/18-9.25 set in winning the Texas Relays and he captured gold at the NCAA Midwest Regional title with a height of 5.56m/18-2.75. Colwick won the 2009 NCAA indoor title when he cleared 5.60m/18-4.5.
Adam, from Santa Maria, Calif., tallied 3,962 points through the first five events of the decathlon and is 12th among 22 entrants. He scored 865 in the 100m (10.98), 785 in the long jump (6.88m), 748 in the shot put (14.32m/46-11.75), 740 in the high jump (1.93m/6-4), and ran the 400m in 49.79 to score 824 points.
The five final events begin at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday with the 110m hurdles followed by discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and the 1500m run.
