Sacramento, Calif. - Two of Rice's top athletes will be in action Thursday at the NCAA Track & Field Championships at Hornet Stadium as seniors Pablo Solares and Luke Stadel will try to qualify for the finals in their specialties. Solares, the 800/1500 champion at the Conference USA championships, runs the 1500 meters at 8:05 pm (CT), while Stadel, the C-USA champion, will throw the shot put at 7:15 pm (CT).
Solares, who has the third-fastest 1500 time in the nation at 3:40.34 coming into the championships, will run in the first of two heats, with the top four finishers in each heat and the next four fastest times advancing to Saturday's final. Northern Arizona's Lopez Lomong will be the top challenger in heat one, with Texas star Leonel Manzano running in the second heat.
Stadel, who has a best of 18.04 meters/59-2.25 this year, will throw in the second flight. The automatic advancement mark is 19.20m, and the top 12 finishers in the qualifying will move on to the final.
