Action Takes Place on Wednesday and Thursday
June 4, 2012
Rice University track and field athlete Clayton Chaney makes his first-ever appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship to be held this week in Des Moines, Iowa, at Drake University's Drake Stadium.
"Going to the NCAA Championship has been my goal all season," stated Chaney. "The conference championship was my last shot to qualify and the weather was not ideal, but I was able to win and score high enough and I am happy to be competing and will do the best I can."
Chaney, a junior, is one of 24 competitors in the decathlon that will compete on Wednesday (June 6) and Thursday (June 7). The Bellville, Texas, native enters the decathlon with a career-high point total of 7,475 points, which he achieved in winning the 2012 Conference USA title. Chaney also captured the 2012 C-USA Indoor heptathlon event for which he was named as C-USA's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year.
A year ago, Chaney finished second in the decathlon at the C-USA Outdoor Championship with 6,901 points. In 2009 as a freshman, he won UCLA's Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational decathlon with 6,539 points and he placed fourth at the C-USA Outdoor Championship.
