Four Rice men's track athletes were named the the C-USA All-Academic Team, the league announced Wednesday. Matt Carey, Gabe Cuadra and Alexander Zinchenko return to the All-Academic Team, while Tyler Wiest makes his first All-Academic Appearance.
Matt Carey is an MBA graduate student with a 3.94 GPA, after graduating from Rice with a 4.24 GPA in Economics. He was a C-USA All-Academic selection in 2011, and has twice been named a CoSIDA Academic All-American. He finished in 11th place at the C-USA Championships, running a 33:15.23 in the 10,000 m
Gabe Cuadra is a senior with a 3.77 GPA in Mathematical Economic Analysis. He was selected to the C-USA All-Academic Team in 2011 and 2012. He finished in fifth place at the C-USA Championship in the 10,000 m race, running a 30:44.36, and finished ninth at 14:44.32 in the 5,000 meter race. He competed at the NCAA Championships in the 10,000 m race this year.
Tyler Wiest makes his first appearance on the C-USA All-Academic Team, as he posted a 3.77 GPA in Mechanical Engineering. He finished fourth in the C-USA Championship with a jump of 1.99 m and has posted five top four finishes in the high jump during outdoor season.
Alex Zinchenko has a 3.59 GPA in Political Science, and appears on the C-USA All-Academic Team for the third straight season. He earned All-C-USA honors with a second-place finish in the discus at the C-USA Championship and also finished fourth in the shot put in the C-USA meet. He posted 11 top 4 finishes between the discus and the shot put in outdoor season, and he competed in the NCAA Championships.
