IRVING, Texas -- Rice track and field athletes Duncan Dickerson, Scott Filip and Evan Karakolis were all named to the C-USA All-Academic Team on Wednesday, the league office announced.

Karakolis (Jr., Javelin) was selected to the all-academic team for a second consecutive season and was recognized just five days after being named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 team. The honors for Filip (So., Multi-Events) and Dickerson (Grad., Hammer Throw) were the first of their respective careers.

Dickerson, who has a 3.47 GPA majoring in Business Management, broke his own school record of 62.07m (set earlier this season) with a winning heave of 62.21m to win the hammer throw at the C-USA Outdoor Championships, becoming the first Owl to ever win a conference title in the event. In addition, Dickerson placed second (17.27m) in the weight throw at the C-USA Indoor Championships this season. The Houston native will be competing at the NCAA West Prelims on Friday beginning at 2 p.m.

Filip boasts a 3.33 GPA while majoring in Sports Management and is coming off a C-USA Outdoor title in the decathlon. The Bloomingdale, Ill. native totaled a personal best 7632 points in the event and joined Ryan Walsh, Jarrett Flax and Clayton Chaney as other Owls to sweep both the C-USA Indoor heptathlon and C-USA Outdoor decathlon in the same season. In winning the C-USA Indoor heptathlon title, Filip set a new Rice and C-USA record with 5785 points. Filip also placed 14th at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the heptathlon to earn Second-Team All-American honors. Filip will be the first Owl competing at this week's NCAA West Prelims, participating in the 1:30 p.m. long jump.

A reigning Co-SIDA Academic All-American, Karakolis broke his own school record in the javelin with a winning throw of 72.76m at the Texas Southern Relays and was named the C-USA Outdoor Athlete of the Week on March 24. He also posted victories at the Victor Lopez Classic (72.02m) and J. Fred Duckett (72.11m). The Scarborough, Ontario native holds a stellar 4.09 GPA while majoring in Mechanical Engineering and will be competing at the NCAA West Prelims on Saturday at 12 p.m., looking to advance to his second straight NCAA National Championships.
