Rice track and field had four athletes competing on the first day of the NCAA West Preliminary Round in Eugene, Ore., at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field, but they did not advance to the NCAA Championship. Only 12 from each event go to Des Moines, Iowa, for the NCAA Championship.
In the men's 10,000m, Michael Trejo placed 40th with a season-best time of 30:58.99. Shot putter Alex Zinchenko was 21st with a mark of 16.89m/55-5. Freshman long jumper Justin Gross placed 24th with a mark of 7.23m/23-8.75.
On the women's side, Ariana Ince finished 14th in the javelin with a mark of 47.82m/156-10, accomplished on her first attempt. Ince is not done though as she competes in the pole vault on Friday starting at 4 p.m. (Pacific). Also competing on Friday are Cleona Oliver in the pole vault, Sarah Agara in the triple jump, and Heather Olson in the 3000m steeplechase.
