HOUSTON – Rice redshirt junior Scott Filip was voted the Conference USA Male Field Performer of the Meet following his record-breaking performance last weekend in El Paso, the league office announced on Friday.
Filip, from Bloomingdale, Ill., earned his second C-USA decathlon title in the last three years by setting a league record with 7837 points. Filip broke the record of former Rice great Clayton Chaney, who held the previous best mark of 7678 points established in 2013.
Filip won five individual events, including the 110m hurdles (15.04), pole vault (4.80m), javelin (56.49m), 100m (10.66) and the 400m (47.58). The victory was Filip’s fifth career C-USA title between the indoor and outdoor season and he became the sixth athlete in league history to win multiple decathlon titles.
Next up for Filip will be the decathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, which will be held June 7-8.
