Houston - Rice University men's track and field squad will have four individuals as well as its 4x400m relay squad compete at the NCAA West Preliminary Round hosted by the University of Oregon at Hayward Field on Thursday, May 26 - Saturday, May 28, 2011. Forty-eight athletes are entered for each event and 24 teams for each relay was well.
The NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship is slated for June 7-12 in Des Moines, Iowa. The top 12 from the East and West advance to the NCAA Championship.
Representing Rice are Michael Trejo in the 10,000m with a top time of 29:44.85, freshman Justin Gross in the long jump (7.41m/24-3.75), Ugo Nduaguba in the triple jump with a mark of 15.57m/51-1, and Alex Zinchenko, the Conference USA shot put champion, with a distance of 17.77m/58-3.75.
Jacob Owolabi, Collin Shurbet, Connor Hayes, and Donte Moore comprise the Owls' 4x400m relay squad that will compete. The team ran 3:09.19 to place second at the C-USA championship and earn a spot in the NCAA West Preliminary Round field.
Decathlete Philip Adam has secured one of 24 spots for the NCAA Championship decathlon. Adam won the C-USA Outdoor decathlon the last three years.
"It is a great accomplishment and a great opportunity for these guys to be competing in the NCAA West Preliminary," says Rice head coach Jon Warren. "Our athletes have a legitimate shot at advancing to the NCAA Championship in Des Moines (Iowa)."
