Nine Owls to Compete at NCAA West Prelims

– Entrants for the 2017 NCAA West Region Preliminary Championships were finalized on Thursday and Rice University track and field programs will send five men and four women to the meet at the University of Texas, May 25-27.

Griffin Lee (3000m steeplechase), Charlie Card-Childers (high jump), Austin Riddle (hammer throw), Uche Ugwunze (hammer throw) and Erik Maher (javelin) have qualified for the men’s meet while Hannah Jackson (200m), Cali Roper (10,000m), Daisy Ding (triple jump) and Cybil Obiozor (triple jump) will compete on the women’s side.

Athletes who rank among the top 48 in their respective event earn berths into the NCAA West Preliminary Round. The best 24 relay times also advanced to the NCAA Prelims. Athletes with the top 12 times/marks and the best 12 relay teams at both the East and West prelims will qualify for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, June 10-13.

There is no decathlon or heptathlon competition at the NCAA preliminary rounds. The top 24 decathlon and heptathlon marks, which includes Rice’s Scott Filip (7th-Decathlon-7915 points), have earned an automatic berth to the NCAAs.

The 2017 NCAA West Region Preliminary begins Thursday, May 27, at 11:00 a.m. with the men’s javelin throw competition, women’s hammer throw and women’s pole vault. The women’s 400m hurdles at 4:30 p.m. is the first event on the track.
