After placing second at the 2008 Conference USA Indoor Championship, Jon Warren's Rice Owls are ready to do battle at this weekend's C-USA Outdoor Championship in El Paso, Texas. Action gets underway on Thursday with the decathlon events in the morning and the hammer throw starting at 4:30 p.m. (Central).

"I certainly believe that it's UTEP's meet to lose," comments Warren. "The Miners are strong across the board and they will be difficult to beat. But, if everything does not click for them it will open the door for us as well as for Houston. If we have a great meet we can win the championship."

The Owls placed second to Houston at the 2008 C-USA Indoor meet, while UTEP finished third.

Warren will count on a variety Owls to score points.

"We are well represented and balanced, which gives us the ability to score in any event," says Warren.

The Owls are led by Jason Colwick, who ranks number one in the nation in the pole vault with the best C-USA mark of 18-2.5. Entering the meet, Rice vaulters own five of the top eight spots in the event.

Other leading performers for Rice are Phillip Adam in the decathlon, Bubba Heard in the 100m (10.43; second in C-USA) and 200m (20.93; third in C-USA), Brett Olson (9:37.20; fifth in league) and Michael Trejo (9:31.32; fourth in C-USA) in the 3000m steeplechase, Gary Anderson ranks second in the 110m hurdles (10.61), Simon Bucknell in the 1500m (3:54.15), and Clay Baker in the shot put (54-4.75; fourth) and discus (166-11; fifth).

Omar Wright has posted the league's second-highest mark in the high jump at 6-10.75.

Devon Fanfair has jumped the third-best mark in the long jump (23-9.5) and fourth in the long jump (49-7.75), while Ugo Nduaguba ranks third in the triple jump (49-11.75)

At last year's C-USA Outdoor meet on the Rice campus the Owls finished fifth, despite scoring more points than they did in 2006 when they placed third.

Team points are awarded to the first eight places in each event (10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1).
