C-USA Outdoor Championships Day 1 Results
EL PASO, Texas – Rice redshirt junior Scott Filip sits in first place in the decathlon at the Conference USA Outdoor Championships after completing five events on Thursday’s at UTEP’s Kidd Field.
Filip, who is seeking to win his fifth career C-USA title and second decathlon gold medal, compiled 4237 points on Friday by winning the 100m (10.66) and 400m (47.58), while placing second in the long jump (7.55m/24-09.25) and third in the high jump (1.99m/6-06.25).
Filip notched PR’s in the 100m, long jump and 400m and will take a 175 point lead over FIU’s Chris Sullivan into the final five events of the decathlon on Friday.
In addition to Filip, redshirt sophomore Charlie Card-Childers won the high jump (2.11m/6-11.00) and placed second in the shot put (12.56m/41-02.50) and is in fifth place (3742 points) in the decathlon while redshirt junior Colton Torrance finished the evening in seventh (3581 points). Freshman Emerson Schulz also collected 3124 points in his first C-USA Outdoor Championships, good enough for 11th.
The Rice women also had three competitors in the heptathlon: freshman Zinedine Russell (8th-3026 points), sophomore Giulia Sportoletti (13th-2876 points) and Amanda Pasko (19th-2324 points). Russell, from Kingston, Jamaica, placed fifth in the 100m hurdles with a season-best time of 14.41 while also setting a season-best mark in the high jump (1.64m/5-04.50) to place sixth.
Day two of the C-USA Championships will begin on Friday starting at 11 a.m. (CT).
