Rice senior Bubba Heard has been named the Conference USA's male track and field athlete of the week for the week ending April 13, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
Heard earned the honor on the strength of entering the national top 20 in the 200 meters with the fastest time by an Owl in the event in 13 years. He won the 200 meters in 20.93 seconds at last weekend's TSU Quadrangular in Houston, becoming the first Rice sprinter since Bryan Bronson in 1995 to break 21 seconds. Bronson ran a 20.61 that season, after setting the school record of 20.28 in 1992. Heard's time currently leads C-USA and is 16th in the nation.
This is Heard's first C-USA honor and the second for an Owl in the four weeks the outdoor award has been presented this season. Pole Vaulter Jason Colwick was honored for the week ending March 23.
