Los Angeles -- Rice freshman decathlete Clayton Chaney (Bellville, Texas) won the decathlon at UCLA's Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational at Drake Stadium. Chaney totaled a career-high 6,539 points in winning the multi-event competition. His previous best was 6,477 at the Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables, Fla.

Chaney was first in the 100 (827), long jump (776), and in the 110m hurdles (852). Connor Hayes totaled 5,360 points to place sixth.

Other highlights from L.A.:

Clay Baker fourth in the discus (open) with a season-high mark 50.74m/166-06.

John Berens finished sixth in the triple jump (open) with a mark of 13.95m/45-9.25.

Freshman Collin Shurbet was seventh in the 110m hurdles with a career-fast time of 15.09. Shurbet also placed 10th in the 400m hurdles (53.71).

In the 100m dash John Welch placed eighth with a season-best 11.00.

In the 800m run, Dan Sloat was 14th (1:55.29-season-best), while Jordan Hmaidan was 21st (1:56.62).

Brett Olson placed ninth in a field of 22 competitors in the 3000m steeplechase with a season-best time of 9:17.78. Michael Trejo was 12th (9:30.44), while James llamas finished 14th (9:30.73).
