Rice's Jason Colwick (San Marcos, Texas) has been selected as Conference USA's track and field athlete of the week for his record-setting performance at the Texas Relays.
In his first outdoor competition, Colwick posted the world's second-best mark in the pole vault. He vaulted his winning height of 5.72m/18-9.25 on his first attempt in front of 22,000 onlookers to set a new venue record at Myers Stadium. His winning mark surpasses his school record of 5.55m/18-2.5 set at the same event last year. The high flyer began the day passing on heights at 5.05m, 5.20m, and 5.30m. The junior then cleared 5.40m on his first attempt, passed at 5.50m, and missed his first attempt at 5.55m before clearing it. He then cleared his first try at 5.60m before going over 5.72m.
Colwick is one of four Rice vaulters that have won the Texas Relays more than once. Previous two-time winners include Dane Weichert (1935 and 1937), Fred Hansen (1962 and 1963), Dave Roberts (1971 and 1973), and Colwick (2008 and 2009).
His 5.72m mark ranks him in the top ten USA since 2005, and top 30 in the world since 2004.
