HOUSTON – Rice junior decathlete Scott Filip was selected the Conference USA Male Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday afternoon.
The All-American posted a career best 7915 points to place second in the decathlon at last week’s Texas Relays, a mark good enough to rank second in the NCAA and third in the world.
Filip, from Bloomingdale, Illinois, set a new personal best in points and finished behind only Texas A&M’s Lindon Victor, who established a new NCAA record with 8472 points. Filip placed second in the 100m (10.77), long jump (7.41m) and 400m (48.20) and in the process claimed the second-highest points total in Rice history.
The Owls will be back in action this weekend when they partake in the Skechers Carl Knight Invitational hosted by Stephen F. Austin and the Houston Alumni Invitational hosted by the University of Houston.
