HOUSTON - The Rice track and field teams got off to a solid start on the first day of the 2008 Victor Lopez Bayou Classic held at the Rice Track Stadium on Friday.

On the women's side, Becky Wade made an amazing debut in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, posting a regional qualifying time of 10:41.77 to finish second in her first time to compete in the event. The Owls made an impressive showing in the 1500 meters. Lennie Waite, running unattached, won with a lifetime best time of 4:23.69. Callie Wells took the bronze with her regional qualifying time of 4:27.26. Also posting career-best times in the race were Nicole Mericle (4:37.88 for 8th) and Britany Williams (4:42.24 for 10th).

In the throws, Katie Dollinger had a best in the hammer with a heave of 148-7 (45.30m) to take seventh. Andrea Jackson also scored in the javelin with her toss of 93-5 (28.48m).

For the men, John Buck and Scott Zivick finished neck and neck in the 1500, with Buck posting a 3:59.60 to edge his teammate by 0.31. Former Rice great Pablo Solares set a blistering pace to win the race in 3:41.86, eight seconds ahead of the field.

Action resumes Saturday morning at the Rice Track Stadium as the men's shot put and long jump begin at 9:30 am. The running events get underway at 11 am.
