Owls Win Pair of Hammer Throws at Victor Lopez Classic

HOUSTON - The Rice Owls track and field teams were in action on Friday on day two of the 35th annual Victor Lopez Classic, and were victorious in both the men's and women's hammer throws.

Redshirt junior Austin Riddle won his second hammer throw event of the young outdoor season and the sixth hammer throw victory of his career with a winning mark of 63.87m. Uche Ugwunze also had a strong performance in the HT, finishing second with a throw of 60.77m.

On the women's side, senior Dreu Dixson set a new personal best mark of 55.10m and moved to third on the Conference USA rankings with her winning throw. 

Redshirt junior Griffin Lee finished first among collegiate runners in the 3000m steeplechase in a time of 9:13.87 while Adolfo Carvalho (9:31.75) and Marco Ruiz (9:34.08) placed sixth and seventh, respectively. 

Redshirt sophomore Matt Calem led the Owls in the 5000m by placing third collegiately with a time of 15:08.40 while Imran Bell finished fifth collegiately (15:12.61). 

Senior Hannah Kay also competed in the women's 3000m steeplechase and placed sixth among collegiate runners with a mark of 11:21.99.

The Victor Lopez Classic will resume on Saturday at 8 a.m., beginning with the restart of the men's and women's 10k races that were postponed late Friday evening due to inclement weather.
