HOUSTON, Texas- The Rice Owls men's track and field squad will be sending three athletes to this weekend's NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
Senior Chris Pillow (pole vault), sophomore Scott Filip (heptathlon) and senior Ben Pressley (long jump) will all be trying to become the first Owl to win an NCAA Indoor title since Jason Colwick did the honors in 2010 in the pole vault. In total, Rice has had four different NCAA Indoor champions.
Pillow is ranked fourth in the nation in the pole vault and is coming off of a second place finish at the USATF Indoor Championships, establishing a career-best mark of 18-4.5. That performance came on the heels of his second straight C-USA Indoor title, winning with a mark of 17-7.25 and earning C-USA Co-Field Performer of the Meet honors. Pillow has won four individual titles this season and the Mechanicsville, Virginia native will be looking to add a national championship to his résumé when he competes Friday at 6 p.m.
Filip, from Bloomingdale, Ill., won his second straight C-USA heptathlon with a lifetime best 5785 points and currently ranks sixth in the nation. In Birmingham Filip won the 60m dash (6.89) shot put (13.93m) high jump (2.02m) and pole vault (4.90m). The sophomore will begin competition on Friday at 10 a.m. starting with the 60 meter dash.
The final athlete competing for the Owls is Pressley, who surprised everyone with a lifetime best jump of 7.70m (25-3.25) to win his first career C-USA Indoor title and tied for the best jump in C-USA Indoor Championships history. Pressley currently ranks 14th in the country and will compete at his first NCAA Championships starting at 6 p.m. on Friday.
