Houston -- The Rice Owls men's track and field program competes this weekend at the Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championship at the University of Houston's Yeoman Field house.
Led by head coach Jon Warren, the Owls placed third at the 2009 event with 104.5 points to trail Houston (147.5) and UTEP (113) in the team race. In 2008, Rice was second with 116.5 points.
Rice looks to receive major points from pole vaulter Jason Colwick and heptathlete Jack Spinks. Both enter competition with top marks in their respective events. Colwick's indoor pole vault mark of 5.67m (18-07.25) is the top collegiate as well as the top American mark for 2010. Spinks enters the fray with 4,556 points to rank first in C-USA.
Competition in the 2010 Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships begins at 9 a.m. on Friday with the first events in the pentathlon and heptathlon. Field event competition begins at 2 p.m. The women's 5000m final begins at 5 p.m. and the remaining events begin at 6 p.m. Competition resumes on Saturday morning (11 a.m.) for the multi-events, 1 p.m. field events, and at 3 p.m. for running event finals.
