Houston - The Rice men's track and field team competes this Friday and Saturday (Feb. 25-26) at the Conference USA Indoor Track & Field Championship at the University of Houston's Yeoman Fieldhouse.
Competition begins at 9 a.m. on Friday with the first events in the pentathlon and heptathlon. Field event competition begins at 3 p.m. with the men's weight throw. The men's 5000m final begins at 5 p.m. and the remaining events begin at 6 p.m. Competition resumes on Saturday morning (11 a.m.) for the heptathlon, 1 p.m. field events, and at 3 p.m. for running event finals.
Head coach Jon Warren has several Owls contending for podium rights. Dan Sloat in the 800m (1:52.72) enters ranked fourth in C-USA, Michael Trejo is third in the 3000m at 8:15.23, and Matt Carey is fourth in the 5000m (15:46.42).
Sophomore Clayton Chaney enters first in the heptathlon with 5,204 points and eighth in the 60m hurdles (8.31). Another multi-event athlete, freshman Justin Gross is fourth in the long jump (7.16m/23-6) and seventh in the heptathlon (3,726). Also looking to score in the heptathlon is Ben Pressley, fifth at 4,143, and Pete Navarra is sixth at 3,835. Conner Hayes is also slated to compete in the heptathlon.
Ugo Nduaguba enters the triple jump competition rated fifth at 15.37m/50-5.25 and also ninth in the long jump (7.00m/22-11.75). Gross is also eighth in C-USA in the triple jump (13.84m/45-5). Alex Zinchenko has the third-best shot put mark in C-USA at 16.96m/55-7.75.
Admission to the two-day event is free for students who attend a Conference USA member institution. An adult all-session pass is $25 while a youth all-session pass is $15. Per day tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for youth.
