The Rice Owls men's track and field squad competes this weekend at the 2012 Conference USA Indoor Championship in Birmingham, Ala., inside the Birmingham CrossPlex. UAB hosts the championship for the first time.
The two-day event is set for Saturday, Feb. 25 and Sunday, Feb. 26. Prior to this season, Houston had been the only school to host the Championships at an on-campus site.
The indoor championship will be televised by Fox Sports Network on a tape delayed.
The preliminary events will begin at 9 a.m. CT on Saturday with the pentathlon and heptathlon events, followed by field events at 10 a.m.
Sunday's action start with the heptathlon 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1,000m run at 10 a.m. The championship field events will begin with the women's shot put at Noon and the running events at 2 p.m. The championships will conclude with the final awards presentation set for 5:30 p.m.
Collin Shurbet enters the 400m event ranked 10th in C-USA (48.80), while Dan Sloat is ranked seventh in the 800m (1:52.50). John Cavallo (8:22.63) and William Firth (8:25.61) are rated ninth and 10th in the 3000m.
Clayton Chaney figures prominently in the 60m hurdles and the heptathlon. Chaney is ranked fifth in the hurdles with a time of 8.20 and is the top contender in the heptathlon with a league-high 5,293 points.
Also in the heptathlon, is Sam McGuffie (third with 4,970 points), Chris Sanders (fourth with 4,900 points) and Ben Pressley is fifth (4,825 points). McGuffie also ranks fifth in the high jump in C-USA (2.00m/6-6-75) and sixth in the long jump (6.98m/22-11).
In the pole vault, freshman Chris Pillow enters the competition fifth at 4.81m/15-9.25. Freshman J.J. Walker, with a mark of 14.04m/46-0.75, is fifth in the triple jump. Alex Zinchenko is also fifth in the shot put (17.44m/57-2.75).
Admission prices are as followed; two-day pass $20 for adults and $10 for youth (12-17); single day ticket $15 per day for adults and $6 for youth (12-17). Admission is FREE for children age 11 and under and for students with valid ID cards who attend a C-USA member institution.
