Maxwell Wins A&M Invitational 5,000
Rice senior Justin Maxwell broke the 15-minute mark in the 5,000 meters for the first time in his career while winning the event at the Texas A&M Invitational at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium in College Station on Friday night.
Maxwell bettered his previous best time of 15:00.32 set earlier this year at the Hilton Invitational. He provided 10 of the Owls 12 points in the first eight events of the two-day competition which will conclude this afternoon at 1 p.m. His win gave the Owls a sweep of the 5,000 meter events as Allison Pye captured the women's event later on Friday night.
Maxwell's time ranks as the second-best in Conference USA heading into this weekend's competition.
Sophomore Clay Baker picked up the Owls other two points on Friday with a seventh-place finish in the weight throw. Baker improved his school record in the event with his throw of 16.48m/54-1.
