Chaney Leads Heptathlon After First Day

Feb. 4, 2011

Sophomore Clayton Chaney holds the lead after the first day of completion in the heptathlon at the Frank Sevigne Classic, in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Chaney is one of five Owls who were able to travel to Nebraska for this weekend's competition. The bulk of the team was unable to make the trip after their later flights were cancelled due to the winter storm that hit the Houston area on Friday.

Chaney posted the top marks in the 60 meter dash and the shot put, and the second-best marks in the long jump and high jump to post a first-day total of 2,879 points, 150 more than Teran Walford of Nebraska. Chaney's Rice teammate, Justin Gross, had been in second place heading into the last of the first day's four events, but he fell to fifth after failing to clear the opening height in the high jump.

Rice sophomore Donte Moore shaved four tenths off of his best time in the 200 meters, placing 22nd with a time of 22.30 to round out the Owls efforts on the first day.

The final four events of the heptathlon will begin on Saturday morning, while the remaining events of the Sevigne Classic will be held on Saturday afternoon.
