AUSTIN, Texas -- Rice graduate student Duncan Dickerson closed out a strong first season as an Owl by placing 38th in the hammer throw at the NCAA West Prelims Friday afternoon at the University of Texas.
Dickerson, from Houston, threw a day's-best 57.84m on his second attempt following an initial throw of 53.35m. He would later foul on his third attempt.
Dickerson had a stellar 2015, becoming the first Owl to ever win a conference title in the hammer. He broke his own school record at the C-USA Outdoor Championships with a throw of 62.21m. Dickerson was most recently named to the C-USA All-Academic Team with his GPA of 3.47 in Business Management.
Redshirt sophomore hurdler Filip Drozdowski was set to compete in the 110m hurdles but strained his hip flexor warming up and was unable to perform.
The Owls will have three more athletes competing on Saturday, with Evan Karakolis and Erik Maher throwing the javelin (12 p.m.) and Chris Pillow competing in the pole vault (1 p.m.)
