– Rice redshirt junior thrower Austin Riddle qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships for a second straight year with a sixth place finish in the hammer throw Thursday afternoon in the NCAA West Prelims at the University of Texas’ Mike A. Myers Stadium.

The Houston (Memorial HS) native punched his ticket to Eugene, Oregon with a qualifying throw of 66.00m (216-6.00) on his first attempt, proceeded by a foul and a final throw of 65.95m (216-4.00). Riddle will join redshirt junior teammate Scott Filip (decathlon) at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and will compete in the hammer throw on Wednesday, June 7 at 4 p.m. (CT).

“Austin started the competition with a great throw and we were confident that it would qualify him for the NCAA finals in Eugene,” Rice men’s T&F head coach Jon Warren said. “I’m excited to see what he can do on his second trip to the NCAA meet.”

Last year Riddle placed 19th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, earning All-American Honorable Mention honors.

In addition to Riddle, the Owls were also represented in the hammer throw by junior Uche Ugwunze. The McKinney, Texas native placed 33rd overall (60.45m/198-4.00) after fouling on his first two attempts in his first NCAA West Prelims appearance of his career.

Rice junior Erik Maher, who entered the meet seeded 33rd, placed 29th in the javelin with a mark of 60.87m (199-8.00). The North Caldwell, N.J. native improved upon his 45th place finish at last year’s NCAA West Prelims.

The Owls will have two more athletes competing in Austin the rest of the week, beginning with Griffin Lee tomorrow evening (9 p.m.) in the steeplechase and Charlie Card-Childers in the high jump on Saturday at 6 p.m.
