Evan Karakolis threw 195-8 to finish 38th and Chris Pillow couldn't quite clear 17-0.75 in NCAA Championships West Preliminary Round action in Austin, Texas. Clayton Chaney is still yet to compete in the NCAA Championships, he will compete from June 5-6 in Eugene, Ore.
Karakolis, the school record holder in the javelin, competed in the NCAA Championships for the first time as a true freshman, and threw 195 feet, 8 inches, in only the third competition of his collegiate career.
Chris Pillow did not clear 17 feet, 0.75 inches in three attempts, despite having cleared that mark in nine meets this season, including at the Conference USA Championships, where he won the event.
Five Rice men's track athletes have competed at the NCAA Championships, with Clayton Chaney in the decathlon (June 5-6, Eugene, Ore.) remaining.
