Rice Men's Track and Field Is In Third place at Conference USA Track and Field Outdoor Championship

Orlando - The Rice men's track and field team is in third place with 48 points heading into Sunday's final day of action at the Conference USA Track and Field Outdoor Championship, held at held at UCF's Track and Soccer Complex. Houston leads the eight-team field with 64 points.

"Today, I thought, went pretty well," commented Rice head coach Jon Warren. "As far as the finals went, we did better than we had hoped in the steeplechase, the long jump, and the shot put with everyone that placed did so with either a personal best or a season's best. I know the team can keep it going on Sunday."

Justin Maxwell and James llamas placed fourth and fifth in the 3000m steeplechase on Saturday. Maxwell crossed the line at 9:23.10, while Llamas followed at 9:23.34 to score nine points towards the team scoring. Both times ran were season-best times.

Ikechi Nnamani and Tyler Wiest finished sixth and seventh respectively in the high jump. Nnamani cleared 2.05m/6-8.75 and Wiest cleared 2.00m/6-6.75.

Ugo Nduaguba placed eighth in the long jump with a mark of 7.16m/23-6. Andrew Briggs finished 12th (6.83m/22-5), while Ikechi Nnamani was 16th (6.26m/20-6.5).

In the shot put, Will Meyers threw a season-best sixth place mark of 15.86m/52-0.5, while Alex Zinchenko (15.76m/51-8.5) and Clay Baker (15.51m/50-10.75) finished ninth and 10th respectively.

With a time of 47.96, freshman Donte Moore qualified fifth for Saturday's 400m final. Jacob Owolabi qualified ninth and just missed the cut with a time of 48.78.

Dan Sloat qualified sixth for Sunday's 800m final with a time of 1:54.60, while Alex Weinheimer was ninth at 1:54.40.

In the 400m hurdles, Collin Shurbet qualified fourth with a time of 52.88 and Connor Hayes was seventh with a season-fast time of 53.73.
