C-USA Outdoor Championship Day 3 Results
EL PASO, Texas - Rice redshirt junior Erik Maher took bronze in the javelin at Saturday's Conference USA Outdoor Championships to lead an Owls' group that collected 21 team points.
Maher, from North Caldwell, N.J., earned his first all-conference honor with a throw of 63.13m (207-01) on his second-to-last attempt, picking up six big points for the Owls. In the same event, freshman Dane Stolsig scored an additional four points while placing fifth overall (60.80m/199-06).
For a second straight day junior thrower Uche Ugwunze earned five points for the Owls with a four place result in the shot (16.59m/54-05.25), establishing a new personal best mark.
In the last event of the evening, Griffin Lee picked up an additional four points for the Owls with a fifth place (9:07.89) in the 3000m steeplechase while senior Marco Ruiz added another point in the event by finishing eighth (9:21.36).
Rice enters the final day of competition in second place with 55 points, trailing only UTSA (60 points).
The Owls also qualified four athletes for Sunday's finals: William Roberts (9th-3:56.52) and Matthew Murray (12th-3:58.42) in the 1500m; Filip Drozdowski (8th-14.49) in the 110m hurdles; and Reagan Olguin (7th-1:52.99) in the 800m.
"Our throwers had another really good day," Rice men's T&F head coach Jon Warren said. "Erik grabbed the bronze in the javelin and freshman Dane Stolsig got fifth in the event. Uche continued to have a great meet following his fourth place finish in the hammer with a fourth place finish in the shot put. On the track in the only final Griffin took fifth in the steeple and qualified for regionals in Austin. Marco ended his steeple career garnering more points. In some tough prelims we qualified Matthew and William in the 1500m, Reagan in the 800m and Filip in the 110 hurdles. Additionally we'll have guys vaulting and throwing the discus too."
Day four of the C-USA Outdoor Championships will begin on Sunday starting with the discus at 2 p.m. (CT).
