Firth Earns C-USA All-Conference Honors

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Rice senior distance runner Will Firth earned Conference USA All-Conference honors with a third place finish in the 3000m steeplechase to highlight the Owls Saturday performance at the C-USA Outdoor Championships.

Firth, from Peoria, Ariz., earned six team points with a finish of 8:59.76 to claim his first career outdoor all-conference honors. In the same event, junior Marco Ruiz earned an additional three team points with a sixth place finish of 9:06.02.

After a second place finish in the hammer throw on Friday, sophomore Austin Riddle added another three points to the Owls tally with a sixth place result (47.92m) in the discus. The Owls also received an additional 2.5 points from senior Karl Pierce in the pole vault, placing sixth by clearing 4.47m (14’8.00).

The Owls also had five athletes qualify for the finals on Sunday, three of which came in the 800m. Freshman Reagan Olguin (4th-1:54.36), sophomore David Diaz (7th-1:55.44), and freshman Veeral Shah (8th-1:55.60) all advanced to Sunday’s finals at 5:10 p.m.

Other Sunday qualifiers included junior William Roberts in the 1500m (9th-3:57.99) and junior Filip Drozdowski in the 100m hurdles (7th-14:54).

Rice will enter the final day of competition in fourth place with 41.5 team points, trailing UTSA (59 points), Charlotte (58 points) and North Texas (49 points). Sunday’s first men’s event will be the shot put beginning at 3 p.m.
