Houston - Rice's Philip Adam became the first-ever Conference USA athlete to be a three-time decathlon champion as he won the title at the 2011 C-USA Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Rice's Holloway Field and Ley Track. A senior from Santa Maria, Calif., Adam captured the title with an all-time best total of 7,514 points, which ranks 17th in the nation and good enough to place him in the NCAA Championship field.

Adam's teammate Clayton Chaney was second with a career-best 6,901 points, while freshman Ben Pressley was fourth (6,166 points), and Pete Navarra placed sixth with 5,742 points.

Adam was third in the 110m hurdles with a time 15.29 (815 points), while Chaney was first at 14.89 (863 points). Adam also placed first in the discus (41.44m/135-11; 694 points), first in the pole vault (4.70m/15-5), second in the javelin (50.20m/164-8; 592 points), and first in the 1500m (4:40.20; 679 points). Chaney won the javelin with a season-best mark of 54.25m/178-0, which was good for 652 points.

In the 10,000m, Michael Trejo picked up a point for the Rice cause with an eighth-place finish (31:45.75). Will Meyers was ninth in the hammer throw with a mark of 49.37m/162-0

As a team the Owls are third with 27 points, while UTEP has 32 points and Tulsa is second with 30 points. Saturday features the 3000m steeplechase final and the 1500m final, as well finals in the long jump, shot put, high jump, and javelin. All of the remaining running events on Saturday will be prelims. Running event action gets underway at 6 p.m.
