New Orleans - Junior distance runner Gabe Cuadra placed third in the 10,000-meter run Friday night at the Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Championship held at Tad Gormley Stadium.
Cuadra, from nearby Friendswood, Texas, ran a season-fast time of 30:55.89, just behind second-place Elkana Rotich of UTEP at 30:55.99. Tulsa's Paulo Pinheiro came in first at 30:40.79.
"Gabe truly earned his medal tonight taking the lead and breaking up the what was the best 10K field I have ever seen over a really long haul," commented Owl head coach Jon Warren. "He then kicked really well and it was a great night for him."
Owl sophomore John Cavallo placed ninth overall with a time of 31:51.25. Memphis' Dan Kuhman ran eighth (31:35.91) to capture one point towards the team title.
In the hammer throw, Rice school-record holder Nick Williams placed ninth with a mark of 47.39m/155-6. East Carolina's Montrell Morrow won with a throw of 60.55m/198-8.
The Rice duo of Clayton Chaney and Chris Sanders dominated the first day of decathlon action, with one or the other capturing one of the day's five events. Chaney won the 100m, long jump, and 400m, while Sanders won the high jump and shot put events.
"In the decathlon Clayton and Chris are both doing very well," stated Warren. "Between those two, Rice won every event in today's decathlon and I hope this continues on Saturday."
After five events, Chaney leads the eight-man field with 3,894 points. Sanders is third at 3,541 points. Houston's Kevin Johnson sits in second place with 3,674 points. Saturday's events are the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and the 1500m.
Live video streaming of the championships will be available on Saturday on all 12-member institutions' All-Access players as well as the C-USA All-Access player beginning at 5 p.m. CT. A subscription is required to view the C-USA Live Streaming on Saturday. Fox Sports Network is set to televise Sunday's final events on tape delay.
An all-sessions ticket is available for $15.00 for adult and $10.00 for youth that is good for all three days of the championship. Single day tickets are $10.00 for adult and $5.00 for youth. Also, current students from each of the 12 schools in Conference USA will be admitted for free with valid school identification.
