Sophomore Omar Wright set a Cayman Islands national record in the high jump and just missed a Rice school record as he cleared 2.16 meters/7-1 to win at the RunSport/Rice Twilight meet at the Rice Track and Soccer Stadium. Wright had three attempts at 2.20/7-2.5, which would have set a school record.
David Axel and Charles Hampton went 1-2 for Rice in the 3000-meter steeplechase, with Axel setting a personal-best of 9:04.53. Hampton was second at 9:08.03.
The Owls notched season-bests in the 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay, with footballer Gary Anderson anchoring the sprint group to a 41.58 second-place finish and Pablo Solares turning in a 47.6 anchor on the long relay as Rice clocked 3:13.58 to take second. Solares earlier took second in the 800 at 1:50.33.
Tyler Whitham, who had a 48.8 leg on the 4x400, also cleared a season-best 4.75/15-7 in the pole vault and had a yearly-best 14.94 in the 110 hurdles, while Bahnsen Miller turned in a 2006-best 48.63 to place third in the 400. Miller ran lead-off on the 4x400 and second leg on the 4x100. Eric Spear, who ran lead-off on the 4x100 and second on the 4x400, was also fifth in the 400 hurdles at 54.37.
Sophomore Colby Keithan had a big personal-best in the 5000, placing third at 15:09.84, and Brett Olson won the "B" section of the 1500 with a season-best 4:05.03.
Rice returns to action in two weeks at the Conference USA championships in El Paso.
