Sloat Places 2nd in 800m at Michael Johnson Classic

Waco, Texas - Several Rice Owls turned in nice performances at Baylor's Michael Johnson Classic on Saturday at the Hart-Patterson Track Complex. The meet was suspended with four scheduled events remaining, including the 400m hurdles, 200m, 5000m, and 4x400m relay.

In the 100m, Welch ran 11.03 to qualify 20th, while Alex Francis went 11.46 to qualify 39th. Welch went 22.54 in the 200m to place 21st. Donte Moore finished sixth in the 400m with Rice's fastest 2010 outdoor time of 47.87.

In the 800m, Dan Sloat placed second with a time of 1:54.18. Alex Weinheimer and Sammy Abuhamra placed 11th and 12th respectively in the 1500m. Weinheimer clocked in at Rice season-best 4:01.54, while Abuhamra improved his 1500m time to 4:03.24. Collin Shurbet was fourth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 52.88. Lee Johnson ran a season-best 55.18 to place 11th, while Connor Hayes (55.30) was 12th.

Michael Trejo placed seventh in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:45.06. Ugo Nduaguba long jumped 6.81m/22-4.25 for his season-best mark to finish 10th. Ikechi Nnamani placed third in the high jump with a mark of 1.95m/6-4.75.



Rice's 4x100m relay featured Sam McGuffie running the second leg in his first outdoor track appearance of 2010. The squad (Alex Francis, Sam McGuffie, John Welch, and Donte Moore) placed ninth with a season-best time of 41.59.

In the triple, sophomore Michael Izuchukwu placed 18th with a mark of 13.24m/43-5.25. In the shot put Clay Baker led Rice with a 11th place finish with a mark of 14.88m/48-10. Alex Zinchenko followed in 12th (14.49m/47-6.5) and Will Meyers was 13th at 14.23m/46-8.25.

Rice hosts the J.Fred Duckett/Rice Twilight Meet next Saturday, April 24, starting at 6 p.m.
