LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Rice Owls men's track and field team concluded action at the Triton Invitational (hosted by UC San Diego) on Saturday, recording four top three finishes.
Senior distance runner David Diaz was the highlight of the afternoon for the Owls, winning the 800-meter with a personal best time of 1:51.49, a mark that ranks fourth in Conference USA. Finishing directly behind Diaz in second place was Rice freshman Jason Bugg, who established a season-best time of 1:51.97 for the fifth-best mark in conference.
Diaz and Bugg were also half of the 1600 relay team that placed third with a finish of 3:16.95.
Sophomore Adolfo Carvalho also set a PR on Saturday for the Owls, crossing the finish line in 9:13.48 to place second overall in the 3000m steeplechase, the second-best mark in C-USA this season.
Also shining in the distance events was Matthew Murray, who placed third among collegiate runners in the 1500m (3:47.27) and Hociel Landa in the 5000m (4th, 14:42.02).
Senior Austin Riddle led a group of Rice throwers by setting a new PR in the discus (7th-53.87m) and a seventh place result (62.83m) in the hammer throw.
Rice will return to action next Saturday when they host the annual J. Fred Duckett Twilight.
