San Marcos, Texas - The Rice men's track and field team concluded Texas State Invitational action on Saturday with excellent results.
For starters, freshman Will Firth won his first-ever 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:13.95 to lead three Owls in the top five. Placing third was Travis Roberts with a time of 9:24.34, while Anthony Urbanelli, was fifth with a season-best time of 10:06.67.
"That was an outstanding steeplechase performance by Will Firth in his first-ever steeplechase," stated Owl head coach Jon Warren. "He ran a solid race and it was just impressive."
Rice finished 1-2 in the javelin. Clayton Chaney led with a distance of 53.60m/175-10, while Jack Spinks was second with a season-high mark of 52.25m/171-5. Spinks was also third in the high jump (1.99m/6-6.26), while Tyler Wiest placed fifth (1.96m/6-5).
In the 800m, Dan Sloat was first with a season-best time of 1:50.77. Collin Shurbet ran second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.15 and Lee Johnson was seventh (54.27) and he was sixth in the 110m hurdles (15.32). Chaney was fourth in the 110m hurdles with an Owl season-fast time of 14.66.
"Clayton did a great job in all of his events in getting ready for decathlon action," said Warren. "Overall, it was a great day by all of our athletes with a lot of personal-best performances."
Alexander Zinchenko continues to be a force in the shot put ring with a fourth-place mark of 16.60m/54-5.50.
Rice competes next Saturday, April 14 in El Paso, Texas, at the UTEP Invitational. The Owls will then host the J.Fred Duckett Twilight on April 21 at Holloway Field/Ley Track.
