Colwick Collects Another Texas Relays Pole Vault Title

April 3, 2010

Austin, Texas - Rice pole vaulter Jason Colwick defended his Texas Relays title by clearing 5.71m/18-8.75. Last year, Colwick posted a career-best and the world's number two mark at 5.72m/18-9.25 for the win.

Colwick, from San Marcos, Texas, is the first three-time champion in the vault at this meet since Abilene Christian's Dale Jenkins won three in a row from 1983-85.

His 5.71m mark on Saturday is currently the third-best height in the world, behind Australia's Steven Hooker's marks of 5.91m/19-4.75 and 5.80m/19-0.25. Hooker, by the way, won the 2008 Beijing gold medal in the pole vault.

In the 3000m steeplechase, Rice's Michael Trejo and Justin Maxwell placed 12th and 13th respectively. Trejo clocked in at 9:44.22, while Maxwell posted a time of 9:49.70.

Rice will be at the UTEP Invitational next Saturday, April 10, 2010 in El Paso, Texas.
