HOUSTON, Texas -- Rice thrower Duncan Dickerson continued to make his mark in the Rice record books by breaking his own school record in the hammer throw on day two of the Victor Lopez Bayou Classic Friday afternoon at Wendel D. Ley Track and Holloway Field.
Dickerson, a graduate student from Houston, eclipsed his own school record (61.24m) set earlier this outdoor season at the TSU Relays with a winning throw of 62.07m on his first attempt Friday. Dickerson, who leads all C-USA athletes in the hammer throw, also had flings of 61.94m and 61.22m, all of which were better than the second place finisher. Fellow sophomore teammate Austin Riddle placed fifth in the hammer with a lifetime best throw of 55.63m and now has the third-best mark in C-USA in the event.
In other action sophomore Griffin Lee placed second in the 3000m steeplechase, finishing in a time of 9:22.11, which is the third-best mark in Conference USA this season. Redshirt junior Aneesh Sampath also set a PR in the 5,000m race, finishing sixth in a time of 14:59.51.
Saturday marks the final day of the Victor Lopez Classic with action picking back up at 11 a.m. The Owls will be well-represented throughout the day.
