Owls Close Strong at Victor Lopez Classic

HOUSTON
- The Rice Owls men's track & field team closed out the 35th annual Victor Lopez Classic with an exclamation point Saturday evening at Wendel D. Ley Track, winning the 4x400 relay in thrilling fashion by less than one second.

The foursome of Reagan Olguin, David Diaz, Colton Torrance and Scott Filip edged out UANL Tigres by a 3:13.74-3:13.84 margin with Filip as the anchor leg. Earlier in the day, Filip placed fourth in the pole vault with a height of 4.70m and competed in the discus.

Rice was also strong in the 1500m with redshirt senior William Roberts placing second overall (3:50.41) and freshman Matthew Murray finishing fourth (3:52.15).

Torrance also competed in the 200m, finishing sixth overall (21.85), while Olguin placed third (1:50.78) among collegiate athletes in the 800m. In other field events redshirt junior Erik Maher was second among collegiate throwers in the javelin, recording a distance of 60.90m, while redshirt senior Filip Drozdowski earned a third place finish (14.50) collegiately in the 110m hurdles.

In dual meet scoring, teams scores were the following: Rice 93-Lamar 46; Rice 93-HBU 58; HBU 73-Lamar 36.

The Owls will next compete at the Texas Relays March 29-April while a few competitors will travel to the West Coast to partake in the Bob Larsen Distance Carnival hosted by UCLA on March 31.
