HOUSTON, Texas - Senior vaulter Alec Hsu placed second in the pole vault and sophomore Evan Karakolis posted the second-best outdoor mark in school history in the javelin to lead the Rice Owls men's track and field team on day one of the Texas Southern Relays on Friday.
Hsu, a native of Phoenix, Arizona, finished behind only Harvard's Andrew Roney by clearing a mark of 15-01.00 (4.60m). Karakolis, from Scarborough, Ontario, placed third in the javelin with a distance of 64.35m, surpassing Ed Howard's 1993 mark of 64.08. Karakolis holds the all-time record with a distance of 69.44m set last season.
Rice posted six, top-five finishes overall, including a fifth-place performance (14.90) by freshman Filip Drozdowski in the prelims of the 110m hurdles to qualify and advance to the finals on Saturday.
Freshman Scott Filip (4th-14-07.25) and sophomore Karl Pierce (5th-14-07.25) also placed in the top five for the Owls on day one.
