Coral Gables, Fla. -- Competing in the season's first outdoor competiton, Rice decathletes Clayton Chaney and Connor Hayes placed second and fourth respectively at the University of Miami's Hurricane Invitational.
Chaney posted a total of 6,477 points, just behind Derek Steinbach's (Wisconsin) first place total of 6,812 points. The Badgers' Ian Jansen was third with 6,379, just ahead of Haye's 5,991 points.
Chaney posted first place marks in the 100m, the 110m hurdles, and the in the javelin. Hayes was first in the 400m and third in the 110m hurdles. Steinbach scored 746 points in the pole vault compared to 522 points by Chaney.
