Nick Williams broke his own school record in the hammer throw, and Evan Karakolis shattered a 20-year old record in the javelin, to lead a strong first day of competition for men's track at the TSU Relays.
Karakolis, broke the school record, previously set by Ed Howard in 1993, with his first throw as a Rice Owl, which stood only briefly, before setting the school record again with a throw of 69.44 m, which won the event.
Williams broke his own school record, set in May of 2012, in the hammer throw with a throw of 50.52.
Chris Pillow wins the pole vault, clearing 5.23 m/17-1.05 ft, his seventh straight competition vaulting over 17 feet.
Alex Zinchenko finished second in the shot put, throwing 16.30 m.
The TSU Relays continue Saturday.
