Houston - Freshman Chris Sanders captured the Shirley Crowe decathlon gold medal in competition held Wednesday and Thursday at Holloway Field/Ley Track and hosted by Rice University.
Sanders totaled 6,544 points, while Jamal Davis (Lon Morris College) came in second with 5,857 points.
"These past two days we had a few goals we were hoping to accomplish and one was to see what Chris Sanders could do in his first collegiate decathlon and another was to get the outdoor season started with a low-key, fun meet with Harvard who is visiting Houston during its spring break," stated Owl head coach Jon Warren. "Chris started our season off great with a victory in his first decathlon and he easily qualified for the USATF Junior National Championship scheduled for this summer.
"Overall it was a great starting meet and I think we achieved what we were looking to do. We will have more athletes, some doing the same events, at the TSU Relays this weekend."
In other action, Jack Spinks won the javelin with a mark of 55.41m and Alex Zinchenko was victorious in the discus (51.39m) and he placed third in the shot put (16.52m). Nick Williams finished second in the weight throw (46.15m).
Rice will have athletes competing this Friday and Saturday at Texas Southern's TSU Relays in Houston.
