Chaney Leads Heptathlon At Men's C-USA Indoor Track Championship
Cuadra Breaks School Record In 5000 m

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- Clayton Chaney leads in the heptathlon by 124 points entering the final day of the C-USA Indoor Track Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex, to lead the Owl men's track team in the first day of competition.
"I thought the first day of competition when well, and we are right where we thought we would be," said Rice Head Coach Jon Warren. "We are set up with a bunch of events tomorrow, including the pole vault and the heptathlon, where we can load on points."
Chaney leads the heptathlon with three events to go. He won the heptathlon 60 m dash, shot put, and high jump, while finishing second in the long jump.
Harry Sagel qualified for Sunday's 800 m final by finishing second in his heat with a mark of 1:54.21. His mark is the fifth-fastest qualifying time in the 800 meters.
Gabe Cuadra set a school record in the 5,000, breaking the nine year old mark set by Marcel Hewamudalige in 2004. Cuadra beat the old Rice standard by over two seconds, and finished sixth in the event.
Rice sits in sixth, two points ahead of Southern Miss, after the first day of the meet.
