BIRMINGHAM, AL – Rice junior thrower Uche Ugwunze set a new Rice record in the weight throw, placing third and earning six team points for the Owls on day one of the Conference USA Indoor Championships.
Ugwunze, from McKinney, Texas, unloaded a throw of 19.64m (64-05.25) on his second-to-last attempt to surpass Austin Riddle’s previous school record of 19.56m set earlier this season. In addition to Ugwunze’s six points, Riddle (6th-18.81m) and freshman Michael Yow (7th-17.69m) earned an additional combined five points.
Rice junior All-American Scott Filip (Bloomingdale, Ill.) returned to the conference championship stage in style by winning three of four events in the heptathlon to take a hearty 3285-3150 point lead entering Sunday. Filip won the 60m dash (7.01), long jump (7.36m/24-01.75) and high jump (2.03m/6-08.00) while placing second in the shot put (13.12m/43-00.50). In the process, Filip broke his own heptathlon school records in both the long jump and high jump.
Colton Torrance also posted a strong opening day in the heptathlon, accumulating 2868 points (fourth place) highlighted by a third place results in the 60m (7.08). Also earning points for the Owls on Saturday were freshmen Christian Cannon (7th-4.47m) and James McNaney (8th-4.32m) in the pole vault.
The Owls also qualified four individual athletes for Sunday’s finals: Matthew Murray (mile, 4:15.14), William Roberts (mile, 4:17.37), Reagan Olguin (800m, 1:52.80) and Filip Drozdowski (60m hurdles, 8.19).
Action will resume on Sunday morning beginning at 11 a.m. with the men’s shot put and triple jump.
