Freshman Shea Kearney tied for the Husky Classic title with a vault of 17-1 to highlight the performance by the Rice Owls men's track and field team this weekend in Seattle.
Kearney, who won the Arizona 5A Division 1 pole vault title last spring at Desert Vista High School in Phoenix, tied for the title with Scott Roth of the University of Washington. The vault was a personal record for Kearney, smashing his previous best of 16-4 ¾ while winning his state title.
Devon Fanfair finished fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 49-6 ½, while Omar Wright made his 2008 debut, finishing fifth among collegians in the high jump with a mark of 6-7. Bubba Heard was ninth among collegiate runners with a season-best clocking of 22.74 in the 200 meters.
The Owls will return to training this weekend as they continue their preparations for the Conference USA Indoor Championships, which will be held at the Yeoman Fieldhouse on the University of Houston campus, February 28-March 1.
