Feb. 11, 2012
College Station, Texas - The Rice men's track and field team placed fifth at the challenging Texas A&M Invitational held at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium on Saturday.
The Owls totaled 53 points to beat UTEP, Alabama, TCU, and Southern Cal. Texas A&M won the team trophy with 211 points.
"This meet was filled with great results for us, especially considering that the field was filled with some of the nation's top teams," said Owl head coach Jon Warren. "Clayton Chaney's hurdle victory led us, but top finishes by John Cavallo in the 3000, Alex Zinchenko's shot put, Chris Pillow's Pole Vault, and many others highlighted a great meet."
Clayton Chaney was impressive in winning the 60m hurdles final with a time of 8.20. Chaney's teammate, Lee Johnson ran sixth with a time of 8.59. Chaney's time is better than his season-best time of 8.25.
Texas A&M won the team title with 211 points, while Missouri was second with 95 points.
Freshman Chris Pillow had a strong performance in the pole vault in placing fourth (4.81m/15-9.25). In the long jump, Ben Pressley was seventh (6.85m/22-5.75) and Sam McGuffie placed ninth (6.62m/21-8.75).
The Owls are next in action on Feb. 25-26 at the Conference USA Indoor Track & Field Championship in Birmingham, Ala.
"This is our last meet before the conference championship and it was important have a good showing so the team would be confident going into Birmingham," stated Warren. "I was very pleased with the team's preparation and execution today."
