- The Rice Owls men's track and field team wrapped up day two of the Charlie Thomas Invitational on Saturday and for a second straight week it was the throwers who stood out.

Austin Riddle, Uche Ugwunze and Michael Yow finished 2nd-4th in the weight throw while Ugwunze also placed seventh in the shot put (15.42m). Riddle threw 18.77m (61-7.00) on his second attempt at the weight throw while Ugwunze recorded a mark of 18.53m (60-9.50) on his final attempt. Yow, a freshman from Keene, Texas, set a personal best with a heave of 18.46m (60-6.75) on his second throw.

"Our throwers more than carried their weight for a second week in a row," Rice men's track & field head coach Jim Warren said. "Austin Riddle led us in what was a remarkably talented field. Uche Ugwunze moved up two spots on his final throw and Michael Yow recorded another personal best. Uche also had a solid shot put performance. We went into the weekend missing some key kids - Scott Filip, Marco Ruiz and Patrick McCoy to name a few. The goal was to see if the others could respond and for the most part I think our athletes had a good weekend and responded with a solid team effort."

Other highlights from Saturday included a fifth place finish (fourth collegiately) in the heptathlon from Colton Torrance, who set a personal best with 4735 points. Filip Drozdowski placed fourth overall in the 60m hurdles (8.18) while Matt Murray finished seventh in the mile (4:13.56). Griffin Lee placed eighth in the 3000m (8:42.61) while Reagan Olguin set an indoor personal best in the 800m (1:53.35).

Rice finished seventh out of nine teams overall with 47 points while host Texas A&M (151 points) finished first overall. UCLA (2nd-83.5), South Plains (3rd-72), Baylor (4th-69), Houston (5th-62.5), Clemson (6th-54), Cincinnati (8th-45) and TCU (9th-37) finished in that order.

The Owls will next participate at the Howie Ryan Invitational on Feb. 10 before competing at the C-USA Indoor Championships Feb. 18-19 in Birmingham, Ala.
