Lincoln, Neb. - In his first-ever heptathlon, Sam McGuffie sits in third place after the first day of action at Nebraska's Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational.
McGuffie, a running back on the Owls football squad, totaled 3,073 points in the first four events. He placed second in the 60m (6.97), fourth in the long jump (6.79m/22-3.5), eighth in the shot put (12.11m/39-8.75), and second in the high jump (2.00m/6-6.75).
"Sam had a solid day, a little disappointed in the shot put, but he did really well in the 60m, long jump, and high jump" said Rice head coach Jon Warren. " For his first-ever hept, he performed really well. Both Sam and Chris Sanders had really good days."
On Saturday, the duo competes in the 60m hurdles, pole vault, and finish with the 1000m.
The Owls conclude Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational action on Saturday.
