Fanfair, a fifth year senior coming off of a red shirt year, leapt 14.98m/49-01.75 to take home the gold. Hot on the heels of his teammate Nduaguba jumped 14.93m/48-11.75, missing Fanfair's mark by only inches.
Sprint events were also a strong point for the Owls thanks to seniors Bubba Heard and Jon Turner. Heard brought home a first place finish in the 200m at 22.12 while Turner took third in the event with a time of 22.51. Turner also took second in the 60m finishing in 6.88.
Freshman Clay Baker managed to begin his Rice career with style by setting a new school record in the weight thrown. Baker hit a mark of 13.74m/45-01.00, besting T.J. Fairbanks' 13.08m/42-11.00 record set in 2004.
The team returns to action on February 2nd at the Houston Invitational at the University of Houston.
