HOUSTON - The Rice Owls men's track & field team sent a handful of athletes to compete at Friday's season-opening Leonard Hilton Memorial indoor meet at the University of Houston, highlighted by a record-breaking performance from senior thrower Austin Riddle.
The Houston native started the indoor season in style by winning the weight throw with a new school record mark of 19.91m (65-04.00), besting the previous record held by current teammate Uche Ugwunze (64-5.25) set last season. All six of Riddle's throws went 19-plus meters, three of which equaled or tied Ugwunze's old record, the best of which came on his fourth attempt.
Ugwunze also placed third (18.84m/61-09.75) in the weight throw while sophomore Michael Yow finished fourth (18.57m/60-11.25). Ugwunze and Yow also threw in the shot put, placing fifth (15.73m/51-07.25) and ninth (14.78m/48-06.00), respectively.
Decathlete Charlie Card-Childers was the other Owl who saw his first action of the season on Friday, finishing sixth in the pole vault (4.45m/14-07.25) and seventh in the 60m hurdles (8.81).
The Owls will next be in action Jan. 26-27 when they return to the Yeoman Field House to compete in the Houston Invitational.
